Assisted suicide advocates in Vermont have published the draft of a bill to make it legal. Senator Jeanette White (D-Windham) is the only sponsor listed. A link to this proposed bill is posted on the “Links” page of this website. We will not attempt a detailed analysis of the bill until it is actually introduced. That is likely to happen by the end of January. The draft bill is similar to legislation introduced but never considered in 2009. Nothing in that bill or in this draft assuages our concerns. We do not believe it is possible to put enough safeguards in any assisted suicide legislation to make the elderly, the disabled, and the sick and dying safe from abuse or from medical error.
